Newport Christmas Lights Switch On
what's happening on the day
Join in the excitement of the countdown to Christmas, when Newport gets its magic festive feel with the official switch on of the decorative lights throughout the town. Friday 22nd November.
A procession including Father Christmas will travel from the Guildhall at 5.30pm to St Nicholas Church arriving at about 6pm. The switch on of the lights will take place around 6pm and will be switched on by the overall Christmas Card Competition winner. This will be followed by a festive sing-a-long in the church accompanied by the Salvation Army.
Live entertainment on at Central Square from 5pm. With Christmas themed entertainment on stage. There will also be street entertainment, see below for detail.
The Rotary Club of Newport in association with Newport Town Council and The Newport Advertiser, run the initiative to give local people the opportunity to remember a loved one, while at the same time raising money for Charity. The Tree of Light will be placed in St Nicholas’s Churchyard. Members of the public are invited to donate a minimum of £5.00 to sponsor a white light. In return the names of loved ones they wish to remember will be printed in a December edition of the Newport Advertiser and a Memorial Book will be displayed in the town Library early in the New Year. If you wish to take part forms are available from The Guildhall and on Newport Town Council Website. www.newportshropshire-tc.gov.uk
