“Not the Tibberton Trot”: 13/9/20

Last weekend, Newport & District Running Club hosted a virtual 10k, called “Not the Tibberton Trot”, on the weekend when, ordinarily, they would have hosted the Tibberton Trot. 26 runners took part, mostly local to Newport and Telford, but some from further afield.

The format was simple: runners were asked to run their own 10k course near to where they live, and send in their time, with evidence, to the club. Whilst no prizes or mementoes were available, the race was free to enter, and full results were published.

The fastest runner on the day was a local man, Terry Pickthall, who ran a PB of 43 minutes and 37 seconds, just over a minute faster than Nick Watts, of Newport & District RC, who completed his 10k in exactly 45 minutes. The “virtual podium” was rounded out by Simon Jones, of Northbrook AC, who completed his 10k in Wolston, Warwickshire, in a time of 47:55.

The fastest female runner was Elizabeth Bennett (NDRC), who was 11th overall with a time of 52:33, just ahead of clubmate Jo Lutner, who was 12th overall with a time of 52:57. The ladies’ podium was rounded out by Claire Woodall, who ran a time of 53:54 to take 14th spot overall.

Tatton 10k: 13/9/20

Last Sunday, NDRC members took part in organised non-virtual races for the first time since lockdown, albeit with covid-secure measures in place. Nick Watts and Kirsty Rollings took on the Tatton 10k at Tatton Park in Cheshire, and Nick sent us this report:

“Sunday's Tatton 10k at Tatton Park was our first race since lockdown and it was the second Tatton 10k to be held with new Covid-19 protocols. There was a socially distanced start, hygiene stations and protective equipment for volunteers. We felt very safe and I did it in a time of 44:55 and Kirsty in 1:01:34.”

“The Lap” Ultramarathon: 12/9/20

Another race with NDRC runners taking part last week was “The Lap”, a 45-mile ultramarathon taking place in the Lake District. Participants in this race undertake an entire lap of Lake Windermere, which, as well as being 45 miles long, features nearly 9,000 feet of climbing, including ascents of peaks such as Gummer’s How and Loughrigg Fell. Jennie and Darren Waters of NDRC took on this immense challenge, and both made it to the finish in a very impressive time of 12 hours, 34 minutes, 38 seconds.

Virtual Great North Run: 13/9/20

One race which didn’t manage to return in its usual form this year was the Great North Run, an event in which Newport & District RC’s Lisa Yap was due to take part. In lieu of the actual event, the organisers hosted this year’s event as a virtual, so Lisa completed her first half marathon as a virtual “GNR” instead, registering a time of 2:31:03 to finish in 7,542nd position.
