The Muddy Flamingo Coming soon

Author | 31 August 2023

To Newport Indoor Market In Newport Shropshire on Friday 8th September. Alison from Mud Kitchen and Heidi from Flamingo Bakes commented that they were really excited to be joining the market community and hope to add another reason to shop local, meander the market and support small businesses.

The Mud Kitchen was born on a farm in rural Shropshire during covid. It was a project Alison had been talking about doing for a few years, as up until then it had just been making a few birthday cakes and suchlike for friends and family, but wanted to progress the business further.

She set up a purpose built commercial kitchen and started baking in there 2 years ago this October. Starting slowly, the majority of her creations were going to Greenfield’s Farmshop in Donnington. Basically whatever they require.

She now supplies them weekly with an ever increasing number of cheesecakes and a variety of bakes including tarts, bread pudding, traybakes and meringue roulades. She has also just started supplying Laine’s Deli stall in Wellington Market, so her cheesecakes are spreading across Telford!

They have now built a second kitchen and have Heidi of Flamingo Bakes in there. And that’s where the idea of the stall began. Alison always talked about doing a collaboration with various other bakers, to have all their wares available in one place and hopeful mobile one day too. When the stall became available at Newport Indoor Market, Alison and Heidi thought it just the right starting block and The Muddy Flamingo’ was born.

They will both continue on with their wholesale businesses, the market stall will work alongside that and provide another outlet for some of their products, especially their ‘free from’ range and cheesecakes. It will also help showcase the larger cakes, cheesecakes and desserts they can do for celebrations to order.

Alison said “Because we’re going to be fairly traditional with our cake range, we’ll also be asking customers to challenge us into making something they haven’t had for a long time. Bringing back wonderful memories in the form of cake!”

Heidi - Started her business as a part time adventure in 2018 after years of making cakes for family and friends.

Business picked up during lockdown when she was on maternity leave. Decided to leave her job as a social worker at the mental health hospital to run the business full time. Flamingo Bakes supply wholesale to the hub in Newport, Pretty Puds in Newport, Bowring Cafe, The Potting Shed, Greenfields Farm Shop, Coffee Aroma in Oakengates, Riverside Tea Room in Ironbridge. As well as making celebration cakes for weddings, birthdays etc.

Passionate about creating cakes that everybody can enjoy, including those on particular diets. Heidi has been perfecting her vegan and gluten free menu for a number of years now and several of these items are sold at the cafes she supplies.

She is currently in the process of developing a sugar free range too. Watch this space.
