Free maths and English courses for adults

Author | 13 January 2025

Adults are being given the chance to boost their maths and English skills in a series of free courses running at three Telford & Wrekin secondary schools.

The community-based courses, which have launched this month, have been created through an innovative partnership between the Learning Community Trust and Telford College.

The courses – which are fully accredited and recognised by universities and employers - are being held during the evenings at Hadley Learning Community, New Road Academy in Wrockwardine Wood, and Burton Borough School in Newport.

Rachael Wilson, the project co-ordinator and communications lead at the Learning Community Trust, said the two organisations were working together to help adults build on their skills with the opportunity to develop a brighter future.

“The part-time courses will be delivered by friendly and expert maths and English teachers who specialise in working with adult learners.

“We are working together to break down barriers to learning, and to create a warm and inclusive learning environment, all delivered in local school buildings.”

The courses are designed to help adults gain a recognised maths or English qualification within 16 weeks, make progress in employment or further studies, and develop key skills that can help in day-to-day life.

They can also help parents to support their children with homework, meet new people in the local community, and develop their interests

The courses all run from 6pm to 9pm, and are based at Hadley Learning Community on Wednesdays, Burton Borough School on Tuesdays, and New Road Academy on Mondays.
Rachael said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with the team at Telford College to help local residents build their confidence in core subjects in order to make life that little bit easier.

“It’s also an opportunity to develop new skills that could completely transform your future prospects both at home and in the workplace.”
