Newport’s Burton Borough School transported audiences back to the roaring 1920s as students put on their first full-scale musical production in more than five years.
The cast and crew brought the murky underworld of New York city to life for four performances of Bugsy Malone.
More than 50 students were involved in performing the Alan Parker musical, to packed audiences, accompanied by the school orchestra.
Danny Williams, head of drama, who directed the show, said: “We could not be prouder of our cast and crew. Everyone has worked tirelessly to ensure that Burton Borough School got a show to be proud of.
“For the vast majority of the cast, this was their first ever production – but we hope it won’t be their last.
“Bugsy is a favourite production with many schools and it is easy to see why.
Gangsters, glamour and gallons of splurge . . . what’s not to like!”
Burton Borough School principal Caroline Bedford said she was ‘absolutely bursting with pride’ at the spectacular performances.
“We were transported to the roaring twenties, thanks to the incredible talent and hard work of our students, staff, and the wider school community. I have to say, I was blown away.
“Every single one of our performers shone on that stage. The energy, the enthusiasm, the sheer joy they brought to their roles was infectious.”
She said the students had shown dedication and commitment by putting in countless hours of rehearsals.
And she added: “I want to thank our incredible parents and families for their unwavering support, for encouraging their children, for helping them learn their lines, and for ensuring they were at every rehearsal, even when it meant juggling busy schedules. Your support is crucial, and we are so grateful for it.”
