All About Newport

Moving forward to the 19th century, we have the canal bridge at Chetwynd End. The canal was built by Thomas Telford and has a fine ‘Roving Bridge’ with ramps which allowed horses pulling barges to transfer to tow paths on different sides of the canal. At the heart of Newport since the 12th Century, is St Nicholas church. You’ll find various carvings, statues and beautiful stained glass windows, which offer an informative glimpse in to its history. Close to the time of the town being formed we see the 12th century church of St. Nicholas – the patron saint of fishermen. Nearby is the Puleston Cross, which was erected to remember Roger de Puleston, a local knight who was killed in Wales in the late 13th century. From medieval times, we have The Guildhall (1-3 High Street) which was started in the 1480s. This is a ll* listed building with beautifully decorated timbers in the main chamber. www.allaboutnewport.co.uk | 19
