Local publisher celebrates 20 years
A Newport publishing company are celebrating 20 years in business
- after stumbling into the field by accident.
Long-time Express & Star
sports writer David Instone
was content just as an author until repeated rejection
over a book idea in the mid-1990s led to he and his
wife Liz deciding to publish it themselves.
The ‘cottage industry’ has now been responsible for
approaching 20 books, mainly football nostalgia and
including some penned by Fleet Street writers.
“It was while visiting various publishers with the
framework of a Steve Bull book in 1994-95 that we
decided to do things ourselves,” David said.
“Although we were being turned down, we gleaned
bits of knowledge that helped convince us we should
push the boat out and produce it ourselves under
the name Thomas Publications - so-called because of
our cocker spaniel at the time! “It sold really well, so
we were up and running and we became more and
more ambitious. I have never really wanted to work
for other publishers since, although I have done so
on occasions on special projects. We just love being
our own bosses and working from home.”
Wolverhampton Wanderers books have provided
the bulk of the couple’s output, although their
back catalogue also contains publications on West
Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa and Matt Le Tissier.
The husband-and-wife team are now working on a
coffee-table book called Wolves All Over The World
that is due out in September. Further details of their
work can be seen at
