There had always been a main route across the marshes and pools of the
Newport area via the bridge which still survives. The route was significant, it
was from London to Chester, and from there to Ireland. The bridge in the centre
of town was so important that a charity called the Bridge Trust was created to
maintain it. From the 18th century turnpike trusts mained the roads into and
out of Newport, and travellers had to pay to use these roads at that time.
Newport was a stopping off point for coaches, carts and travellers along this
main road. Hence, many inns and other appropriate trades were attracted to
Newport – blacksmiths, coach makers, hostelries and posting houses to supply
horses, to name but a few.
