There were very many inns to provide food, a bed to sleep in and stabling for
the horses.. Some survive still as inns, for example: The Shakespeare, which
was a posting house; The Pheasant whose stables can be seen at the back, The
Bridge with its fine coach entrance and The Royal Victoria Hotel, which still has
rings on the old stone walls to tie up horses.
Some inns are now accommodating new businesses; for example Davies, White
& Perry was once The Crown Inn. Here you can see the crown motif above the
door and the gateway to the yard at the back (now Crown Mews). The Star Inn
is now Barbers Estate Agents, and the passage way to its left led to the 'Star
Gardens' – a large 'pleasure garden'. Barclays Bank was once the Red Lion Inn.
Some of its coaching yard can be seen through its archway. This was the largest
inn in Newport in the 17th and 18th centuries and also housed the post office.
Other inns have been demolished. For example, The Old Crow Inn. This was
demolished in 1936 to make way for a side access to Adams' Grammar School.
It had a carriage works at the back. The Pigfold Inn, near the swine market, was
demolished when New Street was inserted in the mid 19th century.
